About DLEAG

The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG) was established in the year 2005. Prior to the establishment of the Agency as an autonomous body, the policing of drugs and related activities was done by a unit in The Gambia Police Force Known as the ‘Drug Squad’.

The first ever legal framework against drug trafficking and abuse in The Gambia was passed as an Act of Parliament in the year 1993. This Act was repealed by the Drug Control Decree 1996. The Drug Control Degree was also repealed and replaced in 2003 by the National Drug Control Council Act (NDCC).

The Agency underwent transformation and reform leading to the amendment of NDCC Act to establish National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA) in 2005 as an autonomous security entity responsible of enforcing, regulating, coordinating and controlling all matters relating to illicit drug trafficking and abuse in the Gambia.

The said Act was amended in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013 respectively to ensure adequate enforcement and strengthen compliance mechanisms. In November 2014, the Agency was renamed Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG) through an amendment Act in 2014. These amendments are geared towards meeting international standards and requirements.

DLEAG has the overall responsibility for providing general policy directions and coordination of the Drug Control Act 2003, liaising with relevant Ministries, donors and other stakeholders.
