About NRS

Mandate
Since information management is a fundamental requirement of Democracy, Good Governance and the Rule of Law, the existence and accessibility of reliable and accurate records, both electronic and print cannot be ruled out. Moreover, accountability, transparency and probity, which are strong catalysts to national development are largely dependent on proper records management.

During the Gambia Government’s Administrative Programme initiated in 1986, an Act of Parliament mandated the National Records Service (NRS) in 1993, to manage the entire records of the nation from creation to destruction or permanent preservation as archives.

One of the key objectives of the NRS is to streamline information and records management procedures while simultaneously improving productivity by providing reliable records and information in a timely manner to personnel requiring them.

The NRS Act 1993 provides for the setting up of an Advisory Committee with the responsibility to establish general policies for the management of public records, advice the Secretary of State on Policy matters relating to the management of public records as well as deal with all matters specifically assigned to it. The membership is as follows: Permanent Secretary, Personnel Management Office (as Chairman), Solicitor General and Legal Secretary, Director General, National Intelligence Agency, Director, Directorate of National Treasury, Auditor General, National Audit Office and Director, National Records Service.
