Passport Application and Procedural System

By virtue of section of 4A of the Immigration Act CAP 16:02 Volume 1V Laws of the Gambia
2009, the Director General of Immigration is the sole authority for issue or replacement of a
valid Passport.

Section 4B of the Act provides that:
(1) A person who is a citizen of The Gambia, and who wishes to acquire a valid passport
may do so in the prescribed form which shall be supported by his or her birth certificate,
four passport size photos, and his or her national identity card.
(2) An application for a valid passport shall contain a declaratory form which shall be
completed and signed by –
(a) A magistrate;
(b) A civil servant who is grade 10 and above
(c) A justice of the peace; or
(d) A notary public

The types of passports:

  • Machine Readable Passport (MRP)
  • Biometric Passport

The passport categories are:

  • Diplomatic
  • Service
  • Ordinary

Currently the fees of the passports are as follows:

  • Biometric Passport – D3,060.00
  • Machine Readable Passport (MRP) – D1,050.00

Ordinary Passport:

How To Apply For Ordinary Passport (MRP):

  • Obtain and complete a passport application form
  • Attach copies of supporting documents and two passport photos
  • Pay the prescribed fee
  • Submit the completed passport form and the supporting documents either in person or
    through close relative where necessary for interview and further processing
  • Where the applicant is in abroad, he or she shall submit his or her application to the
    designated Gambian embassy closest to him or her.

How To Apply For Ordinary Passport (Biometric):

  • Pay the prescribed fee at any Eco bank branch and obtain the passport application
    form
  • Attach copies of supporting documents
  • Submit the completed passport form and the supporting documents in person for
    interview and enrollment processes

Replacement of A Lost Passport:

Where a Gambian passport is lost either in the Gambia or abroad and the bearer wishes to
replace it, the following requirements shall be fulfilled:

  • Provide a police report from where the passport got lost
  • A sworn declaration (affidavit) by the applicant stating the circumstances
  • Obtain and submit a completed application form for replacement with attached
    supporting documents
  • Appear in person or through a close relative where necessary for an interview

Emergency Passport:

Under the circumstances, where a Gambian citizen loss his or her passport or becomes a destitute, to enable him or her return to the Gambia, the Gambia diplomatic or consular service in that country shall issue him or her Emergency Passport to travel back to the Gambia.
